New Harbor Bridge Project traffic alignment will affect I-37, and northbound SH 286. Alternating mainlane closures needed weekend of April 12 – 14 to implement improved traffic flow.

CORPUS CHRISTI – Closures this weekend will usher in a new, permanent traffic alignment associated with the Harbor Bridge Project that will improve traffic flow for motorists traveling on I-37, US 181, and SH 286.

Beginning at noon Sunday, April 14, the new traffic pattern will allow northbound motorists on SH 286 (Crosstown) to connect to northbound US 181 and continue toward Portland or to connect with I-37 toward downtown Corpus Christi and the bayfront. Directional signs will be in place to assist commuters with the new configuration. Traffic connecting from northbound SH 286 to westbound/northbound I-37 will not be affected.

To implement the new traffic alignment, these closures will be necessary this weekend:

  • Friday, April 12, 9 PM to Saturday 5 PM (Phase 1): Northbound SH 286 mainlanes will be COMPLETELY CLOSED at Comanche Street. All northbound mainlane traffic will be reduced to one lane, diverted to the Comanche Street exit, and continue in a single-lane detour to access I-37 and US 181. Despite the temporary detour being in place, major delays are still expected, and motorists are encouraged to plan and take alternate routes. A suggested detour map is attached.
  • Saturday, 6:00 AM to noon Sunday (Phase 2): Eastbound/southbound I-37 will be COMPLETELY CLOSED at the SH 286 interchange. All eastbound/southbound mainlane traffic will be reduced to one lane and diverted to the southbound SH 286 direct connector.  Motorists wishing to access US 181 will U-turn at Tarlton Street. A suggested detour map is attached.

Harbor Bridge Project exit ramp from eastbound IH 37 to Port Avenue will reopen by 5 pm on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

CORPUS CHRISTI – On Tuesday, March 26, by 5 pm, the exit ramp from eastbound IH 37 to Port Avenue will be reopened. The closure was necessary for a drainage tie-in.

Harbor Bridge Project construction may affect the southbound IH 37 connector ramp to southbound SH 286 and could impact commuters with temporary slow-rolling traffic. (Nightly traffic control to be in effect March 25 – 29, 2024)

CORPUS CHRISTI – Beginning Monday, March 25, from 9 pm until 6 am, nightly through Friday, March 29, the southbound IH 37 connector ramp to southbound SH 286 will have traffic control equipment in place for painting operations. Motorists should prepare for minor traffic delays.

Motorists should prepare for potential slow-rolling traffic, consider using alternate routes, follow all traffic control devices, and slow down in the work zones. All work is weather permitting.

Upcoming Harbor Bridge Project temporary closure to affect the eastbound exit ramp from IH 37 to Port Avenue. Five-day closure to be in effect March 25 – 29, 2024.

CORPUS CHRISTI – Beginning Monday, March 25, from 9 am until Friday, March 29, at 6 pm, the exit ramp from eastbound IH 37 to Port Avenue will be closed. The closure is necessary for a drainage tie-in.

Motorists will be alerted to take the detour at the eastbound IH 37 exit ramp to Nueces Bay Boulevard and continue the frontage road to Port Avenue.

Portable message signs will be in place at Up River Road and Buddy Lawrence Drive to alert motorists of the closure and to assist with navigating the alternate route.

Motorists are urged to be aware of the ramp closure, consider using alternate routes, follow all traffic control devices, and to slow down in the work zones. All work is weather permitting.

Harbor Bridge Project construction will affect IH 37 northbound and southbound mainlane shoulders from Staples Street to Nueces Bay Boulevard and could impact commuters with temporary slow-rolling traffic. Nightly traffic control to be in effect February 27 – March 1.

CORPUS CHRISTI – Beginning Tuesday, February 27,  from 9 pm until 6 am, nightly through Friday, March 1, northbound and southbound IH 37 mainlanes may be impacted by slow-rolling traffic from Staples Street to Nueces Bay Boulevard. Traffic control will be in place while operations to paint permanent traffic barriers continue.

Traffic control will be in place while operations to paint permanent traffic barriers continue.

CORPUS CHRISTI – On Thursday, February 8, from 9 pm until 6 am, Friday February 9, all northbound US 181 mainlanes will be closed between Burleson Street and Beach Avenue. The full closure is necessary for asphalt improvements related to the Harbor Bridge Project.

Motorists heading northbound on US 181 will be detoured at the Burleson Street exit and follow the E Causeway Boulevard frontage road to reenter US 181 past Beach Avenue.

Portable message signs will be in place to alert motorists of the mainlane closures and detour routes.

Upcoming Harbor Bridge Project temporary closure to affect the Northwest Loop Ramp from Martin Luther King Drive to southbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway). One-night closure to be in effect February 8, 2024.

CORPUS CHRISTI – On Thursday, February 8, from 9 pm until 6 am, Friday, February 9, the Northwest Loop Ramp from Martin Luther King Drive to southbound SH 286 will be closed at night only. The temporary closure is necessary for pavement repairs.

Motorists heading southbound on US 181 to southbound SH 286 will be detoured to take the Port Ave/Nueces Bay Blvd exit, make a U-turn at Nueces Bay Blvd, and continue southbound on IH 37 to the direct connector ramp for southbound SH 286.

Motorists leaving the Bayfront area to southbound SH 286 will continue northbound on IH 37, take the Port Ave/Nueces Bay Blvd exit, make a U-turn at Nueces Bay Blvd, and continue southbound on IH 37 to the direct connector ramp for southbound SH 286.

Upcoming Harbor Bridge Project mainlane and ramp closures to affect northbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) to IH 37, Comanche Street, and Staples Street. (One-night closure to be in effect January 27, 2024)

CORPUS CHRISTI – On Saturday, January 27, from 9 pm until 6 am, Sunday, January 28, northbound SH 286 will be closed from Comanche Street to IH 37.  The closure is necessary for overhead sign removal.

Message boards will be in place along SH 286 and SH 358 (South Padre Island Drive), directing motorists to take SH 358 to access northbound and southbound IH 37.

Motorists heading northbound on SH 286 will be detoured at the Agnes/Laredo Street exit.

Upcoming Harbor Bridge Project mainlane closure to affect northbound IH 37 mainlanes near the IH 37 and SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) Interchange. Detours to the frontage road will be in place. (Temporary closure to be in effect January 17, 2024)

CORPUS CHRISTI – On Wednesday, January 17, from 9 pm until midnight, northbound IH 37 mainlanes will be closed near the IH 37 and SH 286 Interchange. The closure is necessary to open a new mainlane.

Motorists traveling from the Bayfront and Downtown areas will follow the detour signs to Chaparral Street, Belden Street, Tancahua, to the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road and merge onto IH 37 at the Stillman Avenue on-ramp.

Motorists traveling southbound from US 181 to northbound IH 37 will take the first exit ramp to Martin Luther King Drive and continue on the frontage road to merge onto northbound IH 37 at the Stillman Avenue on-ramp.

The closure will not affect motorists traveling southbound from US 181 to southbound SH 286.

CORPUS CHRISTI – Beginning Friday, December 15, from 9 pm until 6 am, Monday, December 18, all southbound IH 37 mainlanes will be closed from Buddy Lawerence Drive to Staples Street. The closure is necessary to complete a traffic shift onto new IH 37 mainlanes and a bridge over future US 181.

Motorists heading southbound on IH 37 to the Bayfront area will be detoured at Buddy Lawerence Drive, continue on the frontage road, turn right onto Port Avenue, turn left onto Comanche Street, turn right to enter southbound SH 286, make a U-turn at Tarlton Avenue, and head northbound on SH 286 to the northbound US 181 and Staples Street ramps.

Motorists heading southbound on US 181 will be detoured at the Beach Avenue exit and follow the W Causeway Boulevard frontage road to reenter US 181 past Burleson Street.

Motorists heading northbound on IH 37 from the Bayfront area will follow the detour signs to Chaparral Street, Belden Street, N Tancahua, and remain on the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road to reenter IH 37 at Stillman Avenue.

Motorists heading southbound on IH 37 to the Bayfront area will be detoured to take the southbound SH 286 connector ramp, make a U-turn at Tarlton Avenue, and head northbound on SH 286 to the northbound US 181 and Staples Street exit.

Motorists heading southbound on IH 37 to southbound SH 286 via the connector ramp will not be impacted by the closure.

Upcoming Harbor Bridge Project nightly closures to the connector ramp from northbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway) to northbound IH 37. Nightly ramp closures to be in effect October 10 – 13.

CORPUS CHRISTI – Beginning Tuesday, October 10, from 9 pm until 6 am, nightly through Friday, October 13, the connector ramp from northbound SH 286 to northbound IH 37 will be closed. The closure is necessary to install overhead permanent metal decking. Do not be alarmed by the welding light show.

Motorists heading northbound on SH 286 to northbound IH 37 will follow the detour to Staples Street, turn left on Staples Street, and turn left on the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road to enter IH 37 at the Stillman Avenue on-ramp.

Motorists heading northbound on IH 37 from US 181 can access southbound SH 286 via the Northwest Loop Ramp or continue towards Calallen by taking the Port Avenue exit and remaining on the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road to reenter IH 37 at Stillman Avenue.

Motorists heading northbound on IH 37 from the Bayfront area will follow the detour signs to Chaparral Street, Belden Street, N Tancahua, and remain on the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road to reenter IH 37 at Stillman Avenue.

Motorists heading southbound on IH 37 to the Bayfront area will be detoured to take the southbound SH 286 connector ramp, make a U-turn at Tarlton Avenue, and head northbound on SH 286 to the northbound US 181 and Staples Street exit.

Motorists heading southbound on IH 37 to southbound SH 286 via the connector ramp will not be impacted by the closure.

The Harbor Bridge Project announces the opening of the new Leopard Street SH 286 overpass and connectivity corridor for motorists and pedestrians. Permanent opening to be in place September 29, 2023.

CORPUS CHRISTI – On Friday, September 29, 2023, Leopard Street will permanently open with a new bridge providing a safe crossing for motorists and pedestrians over SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway). The four newly constructed lanes, sidewalks in each direction, associated underground drainage, utilities, and lighting from Doss to Josephine Street represent a significant milestone for Harbor Bridge Project Roadworks construction.

The new route will provide better access for commuters along IH 37 and Northside Neighborhoods to access Uptown areas, Corpus Christi City Hall, and the Nueces County Courthouse.

Access to local businesses and residential homes will be maintained.

Motorists heading northbound on IH 37 from US 181 can access southbound SH 286 or continue towards Calallen by taking the Port Avenue exit and remain on the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road to reenter IH 37 at Stillman Avenue.

Motorists heading northbound on IH 37 from the Bayfront area will follow the detour signs to Chaparral Street, Belden Street, N Tancahua, and remain on the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road to reenter IH 37 at Stillman Avenue.

Motorists heading southbound on IH 37 to southbound SH 286 will follow the detour signs to Port Avenue, Comanche Street, and the SH 286 frontage road.

Motorists heading southbound on IH 37 to the Bayfront area will follow the detour as written above to southbound SH 286, make a U-turn at Tarlton Avenue, and head northbound on SH 286 to the northbound US 181 and Staples Street exit.

Motorists heading southbound on IH 37 towards North Beach/northbound US 181 and to the Bayfront area will follow detour signs to take the southbound SH 286 connector ramp, make a U-turn at Tarlton Avenue, and head northbound on SH 286 to the northbound US 181 and Staples Street exit.

Upcoming Harbor Bridge Project closure to affect Breakwater Avenue on North Beach. A detour to Bridgeport Avenue will be in place. Long-term closure to be in effect February 10 until March 22.

CORPUS CHRISTI –  Beginning Friday, February 10, at 8 am, through Wednesday, March 22, Breakwater Ave will be closed from Surfside Blvd to Avenue F. The closure is necessary to install a new waterline at Breakwater as part of the Harbor Bridge Replacement Project.

Breakwater Ave traffic from E Causeway Blvd will be detoured onto Bridgeport Ave during the utility installation. Surfside Blvd will be temporarily converted to two-way traffic to provide northbound and southbound access to Bridgeport Ave.

CORPUS CHRISTI – The IH 37 northbound exit to Martin Luther King Drive and the Northwest Loop Ramp from Martin Luther King Drive to southbound SH 286 (Crosstown) will be closed intermittently between the hours of 9 pm until 6 am, Mondays through Thursdays, beginning Monday, September 26, until Thursday, October 29.

The temporary closures are needed to perform overhead bridge deck work on the new Connector Ramp, which will carry future traffic from southbound IH 37 to northbound US 181.

Motorists heading northbound on IH 37 from the Bayfront will follow the detour signs to Chaparral Street, Belden Street, N Tancahua, and continue on the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road to reenter IH 37 at the Stillman Avenue on-ramp. The closure will not impact motorists heading towards southbound SH 286 from US 181.

Motorists heading southbound on IH 37 towards southbound SH 286, northbound US 181, and to the Bayfront and Uptown areas will follow detour signs to the new connector ramp and merge onto southbound SH 286 to continue south or follow the detour signs to exit Tarlton Street and make a U-turn to continue northbound on SH 286 to the US 181 and Staples Street exit.

Motorists heading northbound on SH 286 to northbound IH 37 will follow the detour to Staples and Antelope Street, turn left on Staples Street, and turn left on the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road to enter IH 37 at the Stillman Avenue on-ramp.

Motorists traveling from the Bayfront area will follow the detour signs to Chaparral Street, Belden Street, N Tancahua, continue on the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road, and take the on-ramp past Stillman Avenue to merge onto northbound IH 37.

Motorists heading northbound on IH 37 from US 181 will be detoured at the Port Avenue/Nueces Bay exit ramp and continue on the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road to reenter IH 37 at the Stillman Avenue on-ramp. Motorists heading northbound on IH 37 from the Bayfront will follow the detour signs to Chaparral Street, Belden Street, N Tancahua, and continue on the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road to reenter IH 37 at the Stillman Avenue on-ramp. The closure will not impact motorists heading towards southbound SH 286 from US 181.

On Friday, March 4, from 9 pm until 3 pm, Saturday, March 5, all southbound IH 37 mainlanes will be closed from the SH 286 Interchange to Staples Street. Motorists heading southbound on IH 37 towards southbound SH 286, northbound US 181, and to the Bayfront and Uptown areas will be detoured as follows: Take the new connector ramp to merge onto southbound SH 286 to continue south, or follow the detour signs to exit Tarlton Street and make a U-turn to continue northbound on SH 286 to the US 181 and Staples Street exit.

The full IH 37 closure is necessary for a long-term mainlane traffic shift on IH 37 from Staples Street to the SH 286 Interchange.

The Harbor Bridge Project announces the opening of a new direct connector ramp to affect traffic heading southbound on IH 37 to southbound SH 286 (Crosstown Expressway). *Delayed three days from original notice due to weather. A one-night full southbound IH 37 closure at the SH 286 Interchange is necessary to open the new ramp. *New permanent connector ramp opening to be in effect February 28, 2022.

CORPUS CHRISTI – Beginning Monday, February 28, the newly constructed direct connector ramp from southbound IH 37 to southbound SH 286 will be open to motorists. As a result, commuters traveling in this direction will no longer exit to the left onto the temporary exit ramp to access SH 286. The new connector ramp represents completed roadwork associated with the Harbor Bridge Project.

On Sunday, February 27, from 9 pm until 6 am, Monday, February 28, all southbound IH 37 mainlanes at the SH 286 Interchange will be closed while crews prepare to switch traffic onto the new ramp. Motorists heading southbound on IH 37 towards southbound SH 286, northbound US 181 and to the Bayfront and Uptown areas will be detoured as follows: Take the Port Avenue exit, turn left on Leopard Street, turn right on Culberson Street to merge onto southbound SH 286 to continue south, or follow the detour signs to exit Tarlton Street and make a U-turn to continue northbound on SH 286 to the US 181 and Staples Street exit. A mainlane flagging operation will be in place for motorists heading southbound on US 181. Alternatively, traffic may take the Beach Avenue exit and follow the W Causeway Boulevard frontage road to reenter US 181 past Burleson Street for a detour.
