What is an Environmental Impact Statement?

  • Document required by the National Environmental Policy Act for large projects that use federal funds.
  • Provides detailed analysis of probable environmental consequences associated with construction
  • Includes public involvement at the beginning of the EIS development and throughout the process
  • Requires coordination with state and federal regulatory agencies
  • Must be approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
